Topic: Tropics–Quick Look
GUSTAV
Last position report was about 125 SE of Guantanamo, Cuba and moving ever so slowly toward the WNW at 5 mph. A new advisory will be issued at 1 pm Alabama time and we will post the full advisory along with the latest tracking forecast. Strong indications that he will be a Gulf of Mexico problem and possibly a major hurricane. Elsewhere in the tropical world.
* A disturbance 100 miles NE of the North Leewards Islands. Winds aloft expected to become more friendly for it to develop.
* Way far away in the East Atlantic, several hundred miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands, a large tropical wave was moving west at 10-15 and it also has some potential.
* Our ex-friend, FAY: She is still causing significant problems. What was left of her was centered over SE Kentucky late this morning but most of the trouble is east of her–especially in North carolina. A new Tornado Watch just issued for most of East North Carolina. Lots of flooding in Charlotte because of Fay. These rain amounts in North Carolina so far:
7.46 Charlotte
4.04 Asheville
10.30 Concord
11.18 Burnsville
FINAL NOTE ABOUT RAIN FROM FAY IN ALABAMA
Josh Johnson, Meteorologist with WSFA-TV, Montgomery, is a long time friend of all of us in the “weather community.” This morning he sent me some interesting instructions about how to illustrate the Alabama rain in a different way. I will try to do that later but probably not today. Thanks, Josh!
