Rolling On The River
Can two fools take a small boat and make it through the massive lock at the Bankhead dam on the Warrior River? YES!
What a great day… thanks to Tim Coleman for allowing me to take a remarkable on his boat yesterday. This set shows our journey from Bluff Creek on the Mulberry fork all the way down to the Holt reservoir.
We went down through the confluence of the Mulberry and Locust Forks of the Warrior River, past the Shoal Creek Coal operation, and through the Bankhead Lock. Special thanks to Phillip Cunningham of the Corps of Engineers for his hospitality and tour of the Bankhead Lock and Dam. And, for getting us through the lock easily!
This now opens the door for a longer journey; the ultimate goal is to make it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico (with a bigger boat, of course)! What a ride of a lifetime that will be; that will take us from near Cordova, through Tuscaloosa, Demopolis, and into the Mobile Delta. We will plan on a longer ride next summer, maybe to Demopolis, and shoot for the long run in 2010.
Long time readers here know my love of the roads less traveled in Alabama; now we are going to attack the “rivers less traveled”. The scenery is out of this world; we are blessed to have these water resources in our state.
NOTE: The WCFT-TV 2,000 foot tower is clearly seen from the lock and dam… a shot of that is in this set (that is the Channel 33 transmission tower in North Tuscaloosa County).
Enjoy the pictures… we will add more on the Flickr set later!
