An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR: The summer solstice is tonight at 6:59 p.m. CDT; this is the day with the most amount of daylight all year, and offers the most direct sunlight (the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer today). After today, the amount of daylight will slowly shrink on daily basis until the winter solstice, which is just before Christmas.

We will be watching developments to the northwest today; convection that fires over Missouri and adjacent states could wind up moving into Northwest Alabama tonight. But, the showers and storms should be weakening, and might not make it as far south as Birmingham. So, for today we will forecast dry and warm weather, and mention just the chance of a shower tonight, with the better possibilities over the northwest part of the state.

OUR WEEKEND: Looks like tomorrow is the best chance of scattered showers and storms with an impulse moving though the state. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow is about one in three. Most of the showers and storms will come during the afternoon, but a morning shower is possible.

Sunday, drier air begins working into North Alabama, and the most numerous showers and storms will shift to areas south and east of Birmingham.

Highs over the weekend will remain in the 80s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Our weather next week looks relatively quiet; any showers should be very isolated Monday through Friday with afternoon highs around 90. As we get into July, moisture and humidity levels will be increasing, and we should have afternoon showers and storms around on just about a daily basis in scattered spots. Temperatures should be near average for summertime.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge scattered showers and storms tomorrow and Sunday, but they will thin out by Monday and Tuesday. Expect about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday, with 7 to 9 hours of sunshine Monday. Highs will remain in the mid 80s along the immediate coast, with temperatures peaking closer to 90 just a few miles inland. The ocean water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 85 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
