Rain Moving Out

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

It wasn’t quite the same as April 3 and 4, 1974, but April the 4th 2008 sure provided an interesting round of weather for Central Alabama. Fortunately, while there were a number of severe storms, the damage results were relatively light, and much of the area managed to get a generous soaking.

The upper trough should be situated over the AL/MS line in the vicinity of Columbus, MS, around 1 pm, so the rain should be ending across Central Alabama by noon-ish. Clouds will stick around, and it won’t be as warm as yesterday with highs today mainly in the 60s.

But with lots of sunshine Sunday we should see a warmup with highs climbing back into the 70s with some spots pushing 80 degrees.

A trough moves across well north of us on Tuesday, so with a surface high off to the northeast of Alabama, I expect us to remain dry. Moisture should return at mid-week, so an isolated shower might be possible, but again it looks mostly dry.

A new trough digging into the southern Rockies on Thursday promises to eject northeastward on Friday bringing another round of storms to the Southeast US. It would appear that the biggest threat for rain and storms will come late Thursday or early Friday. This paves the way for a dry weekend as the system moves briskly out of the area on Saturday.

Looking further afield, there is another round of rain in the long range outlook for Monday followed by a very deep eastern US trough which could spell a late season freeze. This feature has come and gone, but it is in the latest GFS run, so it sure bears watching around April 15th. A real weather chill to go with paying your taxes!!

I’m at Starkeville this morning for the seventh annual Southeast Severe Weather Symposium. Tim Coleman will be presenting in about an hour, and I alway enjoying hearing Tim’s talks. I’ve got one after that on the Super Tuesday February 5th tornado events. I hope that you have a good weekend. God bless.
