Round 2 Today

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below and on iTune

A complex weather pattern across the Southeast this morning, and as I’m writing this another round of severe storms were underway in Northwest Alabama. A watch was in effect until 10 am for much of the northern two-thirds of Alabama and I expect an additional watch this morning. Radar showed an intense echo moving across the Tennessee River Valley as a surface low has developed in Northeast Mississippi. The surface low should track fairly quickly across Alabama taking the threat of severe storms with it into Georgia and the Carolinas. SPC has outlooked a fairly large area of Georgia and nearly all of South Carolina for a moderate risk today. For Alabama, it appears the main threat will be along and north of I-20 and should be ending by early afternoon.

This is the second round of severe storms with the first round coming early this morning and producing a number of hail reports. You can scroll down for some of the pictures sent to us. It appears that damaging wind and large hail will again be the main threats through early this afternoon.

The pattern remains very active with another round of potentially severe weather forecast for Tuesday and early Wednesday. A strong short wave is forecast to come out of the Rockies Tuesday with a surface low forming near Shreveport and tracking northeast very rapidly. This should bring the greatest threat to Central Alabama in the nighttime and early morning hours again. As James noted, this seems to the year for early morning weather systems. I just plain lost track of how many we’ve had already this year.

The pattern goes zonal after that as we end the week with good weather. The zonal pattern is dominated by weak ridging and we can use the rest.

Looking further ahead, there is no sign of any let up in the active pattern. We need the rain, so we just have to take what comes along with it. There is another system on the horizon for Sunday, March 23rd, possibly hanging over into the 24th. And after that there are two more systems in the active conveyor belt with one around 26th and the 31st. No details this far out but the GFS is looking pretty strong on the one around the 26th. And we’ll just take them one at a time.

Thanks for tuning in to the Weather Xtreme Video. I’m at Mt. Cheaha doing a program this afternoon as part of the 6th Annual Conference of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society. Looking forward to a nice day on Sunday without the threat of weather. I hope you have a great weekend. Stay up on the weather and be safe. God bless.
