THIS AFTERNOON: Dry, cool, continental air now covers Alabama with temperatures generally in the 50s at mid-afternoon. We will see the thermometer drop quickly once the sun goes down this evening, and we expect lows in the 26-33 degree range at daybreak tomorrow. Quite the contrast from the warm afternoons of late. Tomorrow will be another sunny, cool day with a high around the 60 degree mark in most communities.

WEEKEND WARM-UP: We hit the mid 60s Saturday, followed by low 70s Sunday as another warming trends begins. The sky will be partly sunny both days, and we will mention only a small risk of a shower Sunday afternoon as warm air aloft associated with the upper ridge over the Gulf should keep most places dry.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Sure looks warm around here Monday and Tuesday with highs in the mid 70s. There will be sufficient moisture for a few widely scattered showers both days, but the best chance of rain will remain northwest of Alabama along a stalled front, where heavy rain is possible over parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

The 12Z GFS is much faster with the mid-week cold front, bringing it through here Tuesday night with a chance of showers and thunderstorms (probably not a severe weather threat), followed by cooler and drier air on Wednesday. The good news is that much of the nation will have relatively pleasant, calm weather on that biggest travel day of the year. Thanksgiving Day looks cool and dry here with lots of sun and a high in the low 60s.

LET’S WATCH THIS: The GFS continues to advertise a heavy rain/severe weather event for Alabama that following weekend (November 26-27)… followed by much colder air. We note the ECMWF isn’t as bullish on the severe weather potential, but it is colder on November 27 with the 5400 meter thickness line well south of Montgomery. With so many people traveling that weekend, we will need to keep an eye on severe weather potential. Please take some time to see the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

AND, JUST FOR FUN… The 12Z GFS shows a voodoo-land snow storm around December 2. But, it is what it is… voodoo…
