Thanks so much to the roughly 400 people who came out on Saturday to partake of storm spotter training at the BJCC and the Birmingham International Auto Show. I was extremely pleased by the show of hands of all the new people who came out. This training is essential but we all hope we never have to use it. But we know we will.

Looks like a semi-cloudy day today with a mixture of sun and clouds. With a good southerly flow at the surface and a nice southwesterly flow aloft, temperatures should warm up into the lower 70s. We are certainly starting the day a bit warmer with most of Central Alabama in the mid 50s at daybreak.

The ridge holds over us until Tuesday but with the flow pattern moisture is increasing so there is a chance of seeing an isolated shower today and a bit better chance on Monday. I think we stay dry today and probably most of us stay dry on Monday. But Tuesday becomes the big day.

The upper low over Baja now kicks out our direction Monday into Tuesday so I expect to see a cold front dragged down into the area. A series of surface lows will likely traverse along the front from the southwest to northeast creating a wet day for us on Tuesday. The trough along the Canadian border will finally push through on Wednesday, so I expect to see the rain ending from the west on Wednesday during the day. Wednesday will be one of those days with a morning low of 58 and an afternoon high of 60 – that is, nearly steady temperatures. But by Thursday we should see a return to sun though temperatures will be the coolest of the week with lows in the mid 30s and highs in the upper 50s.

Following that chilly day we should see a fairly quick warmup as we stay dry into next weekend.

Rainfall with this system should be a pretty good soaker with around one inch of rain for most spots. That will be nice considering how dry we have been since the end of September.

Looking out into the week of Thanksgiving, the GFS is suggesting a more progressive flow pattern with weather systems about every five days or so. One of those systems should bring us rain on Tuesday which clears the way for a lovely Thanksgiving Day. Another strong system could bring a new round of rain around Monday.
