OCTOBER ARRIVES WITH COOL AIR: The Polar front is passing through North Alabama this morning with little fanfare. You will notice a fresh north wind today, gusting to 20/25 mph, which will usher in the coolest air so far this season, and set the stage for a fine fall weekend.

The high today will be in the mid to upper 70s, but both the GFS and the NAM agree that we won’t reach 70 tomorrow despite maximum available sunshine. Early morning lows will drop into the 40s; the coldest morning will come early Sunday. The NAM is now printing a low of 43 for Birmingham, and it has been performing very well in recent weeks. No doubt the colder pockets will visit the 30s for the first time since the spring, and we might even hear of a touch of frost in places where the wind can go calm.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: What a great night tonight for high school football. Temperatures start out in the 60s with a clear sky and fall into the 50s in the fourth quarter. To the north of Birmingham, it will likely be in the 50s during the entire game with a light north breeze and a clear sky.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Tomorrow Auburn travels to Columbia to take on South Carolina (kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CDT). The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 70 degrees, falling into the low 60s by the second half. Alabama will be playing Florida Saturday night in Gainesville. The weather will be perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s at kickoff and into the 60s in the fourth quarter. UAB will play at Troy Saturday night (6:00 kickoff); again the sky will be clear with about 70 at kickoff, followed by upper 50s by the end of the game.

LONG DRY SPELL: Looks like we will stay dry through all of next week with a slow warm-up; highs return to the low 80s by mid-week. I think we can safety say no more 90s until the summer of 2012.

TROPICS: Ophelia is now a category two hurricane moving north through the Atlantic; it will pass east of Bermuda over the weekend on the way to the coastal waters of Nova Scotia. And, Philippe is an interesting storm to the east that just keeps hanging around; looks like it might have a chance of surviving wind shear as it moves to the west. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I am looking forward to speaking at the UAB Trauma Conference at the Medical Forum in downtown Birmingham; looking forward to hearing from many of the ER physicians and EMTs who were on the front lines April 27. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so today. Enjoy the weekend!
