THIS AFTERNOON: As expected, it is a sunny and warm afternoon across Alabama with most places reporting temperatures between 82 and 87 degrees at mid-afternoon. But, a dry cold front will pass through late tonight, and it will usher in the coolest air so far this season.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: A nice north breeze develops tomorrow in the wake of the front as highs drop into the mid 70s. Then, we will struggle to reach 70 degrees Saturday and Sunday with maximum available sunshine. Lows will be in the 40s over the weekend; the coolest morning will come early Sunday with most places reaching the 42-46 degree range. Colder valleys across North Alabama have a decent chance of getting down into the upper 30s. That will be refreshing after the long, hot summer.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Minor visits Jackson-Olin tonight, Lamar County is at Sulligent, and Shades Valley is at Austin in Decatur. Tonight’s games will be rain free and mild. Temperatures will start out in the mid-70s and fall into the 60s by the end of the game. On Friday night, it will be cooler area-wide! Around Birmingham, temperatures start out in the 60s with a clear sky and fall into the 50s in the fourth quarter. In North Alabama, it will likely be in the 50s during the entire game with a light north breeze and a clear sky.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: On Saturday, Auburn travels to Columbia to take on South Carolina (kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CDT). The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 72 degrees, falling into the 60s by the second half. Alabama will be playing Florida Saturday night in Gainesville. The weather will be perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s at kickoff and into the 60s in the fourth quarter. Now out of the question for you to feel some upper 50s when you walk out of the stadium at the final whistle. UAB will play at Troy Saturday night (6:00 kickoff); again the sky will be clear with about 70 at kickoff, followed by upper 50s by the end of the game.

The dry spell will be a long one, which is pretty common in October. Looks like no rain all of next week with just a slow moderating trend.

TROPICS: Ophelia is about to become a hurricane in the Atlantic, but is moving north and won’t bother the U.S. Could be close to Bermuda late in the weekend, however. And, Philippe in the Central Atlantic will move slowly to the west/northwest, but is expected to dissipate by early next week as it encounters very strong winds aloft. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
