THIS MORNING: Once again, dense fog has formed over parts of Alabama. The fog doesn’t seem to be as widespread or thick as yesterday, but there are spots with very low visibilities, and the NWS in Birmingham has issued a dense fog advisory. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s.

Once the fog burns off, the sky will be mostly sunny with a very warm afternoon; most places reach the mid 80s today. The average high for September 29 is 81, so most communities will be about 5 degrees above average. A dry cold front will pass through tonight, and promises to bring the coolest air so far this season.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: The high tomorrow drops into the mid to upper 70s with a fresh north breeze, and by Saturday and Sunday the high will be close to 70 despite maximum available sunshine. Mornings will be chilly; the coolest morning will come early Sunday when most places will start the day in the 43-48 degree range. The colder valleys have a chance of reaching the upper 30s for the first time since the spring. Just a delightful fall weekend as we celebrate the arrival of October.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the games tonight, the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from near 80 at kickoff to near 70 by the fourth quarter. Tomorrow night will be cooler; the kickoff temperature at most stadiums will be close to 70, falling into the upper 50s by the final whistle under a clear sky.

On Saturday, Auburn travels to Columbia to take on South Carolina (kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CDT). The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 72 degrees, falling into the 60s by the second half. Alabama is also on the road; they play in the “Swamp” Saturday night in Gainesville, Florida against the Florida Gators. The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 78 at kickoff into the 60s by the final whistle. UAB will play at Troy Saturday night (6:00 kickoff); again the sky will be clear with about 70 at kickoff, followed by upper 50s by the end of the game. Bottom line is that football weather all across the Deep South this weekend looks wonderful.

The dry weather continues next week with a warming trend. Bottom line is that we don’t expect any rain at least for the next 7 days around here.

TROPICS: Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane in coming days, but the system is moving north over the open Atlantic and is no threat to land. Farther east, Tropical Storm Ophelia is fighting hostile winds aloft, and is forecast to dissipate over the weekend. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
