An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS MORNING: The radar is pretty quiet across Alabama early this morning despite a cold front near the northwest corner of the state. There was actually some pretty rough weather late yesterday and last night along that boundary west of here; significant tornado damage was reported near Cleveland, Mississippi over in the Delta region. Temperatures here are mostly in the low 70s with dew points in the 60s.

LATER TODAY: We expect scattered showers and storms to fire up during the daytime heating process. We might have a strong storm around, and maybe even one that requires a severe thunderstorm warning, but organized severe weather doesn’t look likely with the best low level helicity pulling away from the state and marginal instability values. But, with thunderstorms you have to expect the unexpected, so we will keep a close eye on radar since interesting things can always happen with such a deep upper low to the north. The weather stays warm with a high in the low to mid 80s this afternoon.

TOMORROW THROUGH THURSDAY: The air should be drier here tomorrow, with dew points dropping into the 50s. This should mean the best chance of showers and storms will be over the southern half of the state, but we can’t rule out one as far north as I-20 by mid to late afternoon. The weather stays very warm for late September with a high in the mid 80s.

Wednesday and Thursday should be warm and dry, with highs holding in the 80s along with a good supply of sunshine both days.

COOL CHANGE: A cold front should pass through here in dry fashion late Thursday night or early Friday, and bring some refreshing air into the state just in time for the weekend. The high will drop into the 70s Friday, and by the time we get to the weekend we have a chance of seeing lows in the 40s over the northern half of Alabama. Saturday and Sunday look simply delightful, with a cobalt blue sky, low humidity, and highs in the 70s. Yet another reason October is my very favorite month.

The dry and pleasant weather should last into early next week.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Philippe is in the eastern Atlantic, basically in the middle of nowhere, and it will stay in the middle of nowhere with a slow turn to the north over the open water. The wave that used to be Ophelia is northeast of the Leeward Islands, and is no threat to land, even if it regenerates. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
