An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: A cold front is moving through Alabama this afternoon… at 2:00 it was lined up from near Centre to Pell City to Montevallo to Demopolis. Behind the front, it is cloudy and cool with temperatures only in the 60s in places like Hamilton and Haleyville. Ahead of the front, we are looking at low 80s.

A few showers and storms define the front on radar; those will move out of the area shortly, and the sky should become clear tonight as the weekend begins. Most places will be in the cool 50s early tomorrow, with a few upper 40s possible for the colder valleys across North Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Look for a sunny sky tomorrow with a high near 80. The humidity will be very low with dew points falling into the 40s. Sunday will feature a partly sunny sky, and the next front could bring a few showers late in the day or Sunday night.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Showers will end by the time high school football kicks off tonight! With a gradually-clearing sky this afternoon and evening, the air will feel a little more Fall-like. Temperatures at kick off in the Birmingham area will be in the lower 70s; in the Tennessee Valley and near US 278, it should be just a little cooler than that with temperatures starting out in the mid 60s. By the final whistle, most stadiums around Central and North Alabama will find a fair sky with a temperature in the 59-67º range.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Saturday brings spectacular football weather for Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State and everyone else playing home games. Alabama takes on Arkansas at 2:30 PM, and it will be pleasantly warm with a temperature close to 80º in Tuscaloosa, a sunny sky, and a light north breeze. Auburn hosts FAU at Jordan-Hare, and the 6 PM temperature will be in the lower 70s with a mostly clear sky; by the fourth quarter, it will be in the 60s with a light north breeze. At Jacksonville State, it’ll be about the same as at Auburn: 70s with fair weather early on then dropping into the 60s. UAB visits East Carolina for a 2:30 p.m. CDT kickoff. Occasional showers are possible with temperatures in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: A few showers and possibly a thunderstorm are possible Monday with a cold front passing through. The best chance of showers Tuesday will be along south south of I-20, and the latter half of the week looks warm and dry with highs mostly in the low to mid 80s. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ophelia is fighting harsh upper air winds, and looks very ragged on satellite images this afternoon in the Atlantic. The system should weaken to a tropical depression during the next 18 hours, and should recurve over the open Atlantic before getting close to the U.S. A well organized tropical wave is just off the coast of Africa in the far eastern Atlantic, and has the potential to become Tropical Storm Philippe in coming days.
