THIS MORNING: A cold front is passing through North Alabama as I write this at 5:30 this morning. You can see the progression of the colder air to the north on these 5 a.m. observations…

Birmingham 70
Muscle Shoals 63
Memphis 60
Kansas City 41
Minneapolis/St. Paul 38
International Falls, MN 22

Not much rain on the radar early this morning, but we will hang on to some risk of showers for the next few hours along the front as it moves slowly southward. The dew points will begin to drop later in the morning as the continental air works into the state. And, we hold in the 70s all day with some sun breaking through the clouds later.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: The sky will be cloudy at times tomorrow and Saturday with a moist easterly flow, but we don’t expect any really significant chance of rain with dry air in the low levels. Highs hold in the 70s tomorrow and Saturday, but by Sunday we should creep up into the low 80s. And, with a weak wedge pattern, the eastern counties of the state should be cooler.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight and tomorrow night, the sky should be mostly fair, with temperatures in the low 70s at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the second half.

Alabama will host North Texas Saturday night in Tuscaloosa (6:30 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 78 degrees. Temperatures will drop into the 60s by the fourth quarter with a light north breeze. Auburn is on the road; they will be at Clemson Saturday for a game that kicks off at 11:00 CDT (on ABC 33/40 TV). The sky will be mostly cloudy with a small risk of some light rain. The temperature will rise from near 68 at kickoff into the low 70s by the final whistle. UAB will host Tulane at Legion Field Saturday at 3:00 p.m… the sky will be partly sunny at kickoff with a temperature close to 80 degrees, falling to near 70 by the end of the game. No significant chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels slowly increase, with some risk of widely scattered showers Tuesday and Wednesday. The 00Z GFS shows a cold front pushing through Thursday, followed by cooler air. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range details.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Maria might reach hurricane strength briefly, but this system will move up into the North Atlantic in coming days and is no threat to the U.S. coast. The system is just west of Bermuda this morning. The rest of the Atlantic basin is pretty quiet considering this is mid-September.
