BACK TO THE 80s BY THE WEEKEND: Alabama’s weather looks nice and calm for the next five to seven days as temperatures slowly recover to where they should be in mid September in Alabama. We expect a partly sunny sky today with a high in the upper 70s; that is still well below the average high of 87 degrees. The high tomorrow will be in the low 80s, followed by mid 80s over the weekend.
We have an upper low north of the state, but we believe the showers associated with that feature will stay north of here, and we will maintain a dry forecast through Sunday with partly sunny days and fair nights.
NEXT WEEK: The benign weather pattern continues; it now looks like Nate will behave and stay well south, so most of the week will be dry and warm. We return to the upper 80s, and some places might touch 90 by mid to late week, a reminder it is often very warm, if not hot, in September in Alabama.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: An early forecast for Alabama fans headed up to Pennsylvania to watch the Crimson Tide take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. Saturday in State College will feature a mix of sun and clouds with the chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game. The kickoff temperature (2:30 p.m. CDT) will be near 74 degrees, falling to near 70 by the final whistle. Auburn will host Mississippi State (kickoff shortly before 11:30); the sky should be mostly sunny with temperatures rising from near 78 at kickoff into the low 80s by the fourth quarter.
For the high school games across Alabama tonight and tomorrow night, the sky should be mostly fair with temperatures falling through the 70s during the games.
TROPICAL TRIO: Hurricane Katia is between Bermuda and the East Coast of the U.S., and will recurve harmlessly into the North Atlantic. Tropical Storm Maria out in the Central Atlantic is expected to follow a similar track to Katia, recurving well east of the U.S.
Model agreement on Tropical Storm Nate in the far Southwest Gulf of Mexico is in much better agreement this morning. The outlier is the Canadian, which takes the system to Mobile Bay late Sunday night, but that solution is rejected. The upper low/trough over the eastern U.S. will slowly fade away, and as ridging builds that should turn Nate toward the Mexican coast by mid-week with landfall well south of Brownsville, Texas. Unfortunately, most of Texas won’t see any rain from Nate, with the possible exception of the lower Rio Grande Valley. See the Weather Xtreme video for complete details on tropical weather actions.
