Widely Scattered Showers Popping Up
Temperatures are soaring across Central Alabama on this August Saturday.
All of the major reporting stations in the state were at 90F or above by 11 a.m. this morning, except for Huntsville, where it was 88F. It had already reached 93F at Birmingham at 11 o’clock, but had fallen back to 91F at noon with a few more clouds around.
A few isolated showers had popped up on radar just before noon…
…one was between Studdanrds Crossroad and Townley along CO-102 on the Fayette/Walker County line.
…another was near Goldville in northern Tallapoosa County
…another was along US-31, just east of I-65 in northern Autauga County…northwest of Deatsville.
Other development was seen in the composite reflectivity over northwestern Jefferson County near Graysville/Adamsville…on the Coosa River east of Clanton and in southwestern Jefferson County south of McCalla.
Widely scattered showers will continue to form through the afternoon and some of them could grow into decent storms, so watch out for lightning, brief heavy rain and gusty winds. Don’t expect them to become severe, but that is always a brief possibility with summer pulse storms. I would expect the main activity to be along a dewpoint boundary that separates slightly drier air over Northeast Alabama from the more humid airmass over the rest of the state. Areas from Lawrence through Winston/Walker into Jefferson then south into Chilton and then curving back northeastward toward Wedowee could see the best shower/storm chances this afternoon. And even there is will be only about 30%. Elsewhere, it is less than 20%
