Heat Intensifies

A heat advisory is in effect for most of Alabama, with an Excessive Heat Warning (worse) in effect over extreme south Alabama and all of Mississippi.  The ground is getting drier as we continue to see a mainly clear radar this afternoon, and with strong sunshine, temperatures are hotter than yesterday.  Some current temperatures (at 4 pm):

Anniston 96

Birmingham 97

Tuscaloosa 100

Huntsville (UAH) 101

Muscle Shoals 103

Tupelo 105

Memphis 105

Little Rock 111

Russellville, AR 114

Here in Alabama, the air is a little moist near the surface, with dewpoints in the upper 60s, producing heat index values mainly 100-110, with 113 at MSL.   Needless to day, this heat is dangerous, and if you have to be outside, take the usual precautions (frequent breaks, copious amounts of fluids, etc.).

The heat is worse over northwest Alabama, and especially over Mississippi into Arkansas, due to lower soil moisture there.

With the low soil moisture and hot ground, it is currently 2 degrees hotter, or 103, at 1.5 ft. off the ground than it is at 6 ft. off the ground, where the standard observation is taken.
