NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: There isn’t much convective inhibition across Alabama right now, so during the heat of the day we expect to see scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and early tonight, much like yesterday. It don’t rain everywhere, but where the storms do develop they could pack a punch, with lots of lightning, very heavy rain, and high winds. A good example is the storm that moved through the eastern part of Birmingham yesterday; it dropped 1.82″ at the Birmingham Airport, and a wind gust to 67 mph was measured.

The temperature should reach the low 90s before the storms develop and cool things down.

REST OF THE WEEK: No serious change in this pattern through Friday, as the core of the heat bubble remains west of Alabama. The pattern of morning sun and afternoon storms will continue, with highs mostly in the low 90s.

WEEKEND PEEK: The 00Z GFS suggests the upper ridge will strengthen slightly over the weekend, meaning highs creeping up into the mid 90s with few showers and storms. But, the change will be rather subtle.

LONG RANGE: No serious changes are showing up for the next 15 days… temperatures and rain should be near average for July with the hottest weather holding west of our state. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range details.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day along the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf Coast with the daily risk of a few scattered showers and storms. Highs along the coast will be close to 90, with sea water temperatures remaining in the mid to upper 80s from Panama City west to Gulf Shores.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the vast Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through mid-week.
