Severe Thunderstorm Watch Possible

| June 17, 2011 @ 11:16 am | 1 Reply

The SPC has upgraded parts of West Central Alabama to a Slight Risk Outlook for today and says they may issue a severe thunderstorm watch for Central Alabama in the next couple of hours.

The airmass ahead of the southeastward dropping storm complex is going to become rather unstable. Wind shear is light, which means no supercell storms, just good ‘ol summertime multicellular storms. But they can pack a punch with microbursts that cause wind damage, as we saw last night around Hoover, Vestavia and Homewood. There could also be some hail. No tornadoes though.

Always watch out for lightning with these storms and heavy rain as well. We could use the rain.

Storms are moving into the Birmingham Metro area now.

Here is the radar at 11:15…
