ACTIVE WEATHER TO THE WEST: A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for much of Central Mississippi until 9:00 p.m. CDT because of the MCS (mesoscale convective system) dropping through the Mid-South. About a half dozen severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for counties in North Mississippi as I write this, and we have actually had a couple of tornado warnings there as well. But, the winds aloft will push those storms south, and ultimately southwest through Mississippi with little impact on Alabama.

Around here, the weather is mostly hot and dry at mid-afternoon with temperatures generally in the low to mid 90s. Birmingham is reporting 92 degrees at 3:00… hot spots are to the south where both Montgomery and Mobile have soared to 99 degrees. Hardly any showers or storms are showing up across Alabama, and most of you will stay dry tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: It is very challenging trying to forecast day to day variations in the coverage and placement of scattered showers and storms during June, July, and August. Sure seems like the warmest air aloft under the ridge will remain over Texas this week, so hopefully we will get a few days with a decent coverage of scattered showers and storms, but you just won’t get much widespread rain this time of the year unless we have a tropical system involved. And, of course, with a northwest flow aloft you have to keep an eye on MCS developments over the Mid-South; occasionally those might even make an appearance during the nighttime hours.

Highs stay in the mid 90s for the most part… we note the 12Z GFS MOS has dropped the high Friday to 88, but that sure seems bogus. There will be a risk of a passing shower or storm on a daily basis through the Friday. And, quite frankly, no serious change over the weekend with the upper ridge in place.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the week.

BEACH WEATHER: Look for mostly sunny days and fair nights along the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores with just a few isolated thunderstorms along the way. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with 90s inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a warm 88 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record this week’s show tonight at 8:30 CDT… you can listen/watch live on uStream here.

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow….
