PERSISTENCE: After a review of the 12Z model set, still looks like our weather won’t change much through the weekend.

This afternoon, we have a few widely scattered storms, mostly on the eastern side of the state… those are drifting west, and will die quickly once the sun goes down this evening. Temperatures are not quite as hot as recent days… Birmingham is reporting 93 degrees at 3:00 with a dewpoint of 61, making the relative humidity 34 percent.

The 500 mb temperature (around 18,000 feet off the ground) is -8.8 degrees (C), or 16 degrees (F). Slightly cooler than yesterday, but not enough to make a real difference in sensible weather.

So, bottom line is that will roll with a persistence forecast through the weekend, with hot, hazy days, highs in the mid 90s, and the risk of widely scattered storms during the afternoon and evening hours.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of the upper high sliding westward, putting Alabama in a northerly flow aloft, which could very open the door for an MCS attack from time to time, maybe even at night. Still, this is not the widespread rain event we need, but any increase in showers and storms will be welcomed at this point. Highs should drop slightly into the low 90s.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet, but over in the East Pacific Adrian has become a major hurricane off the coast of Mexico with sustained winds of 115 mph. This hurricane will stay offshore, and weaken this weekend as it moves over cooler water.

AT THE BEACH: Standard summer weather continues through early next week from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with widely scattered storms around. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with 90s inland. The ocean water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 84.7 degrees (F).
