HOT AND DUSTY: Rain deficiencies around the state continue to increase; Birmingham is now 3.22″ below average for 2011, while Tuscaloosa needs 6.44″ to get back to where they should be. Today will be the 13th day in a row without a drop of rain for Birmingham and most other North Alabama communities.

The good news is that there is a chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon, but the bad news is that the storms should be widely spaced, and most places will stay dry. The high will remain in the mid 90s, in the 94-98 degree range.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: Weather changes are very slow and subtle in summer, so don’t look for any serious changes through Sunday. But, upper heights come down ever so slightly, so just maybe you might see a little more action on radar during the peak of the daytime heating process late in the week and over the weekend. Still, nothing widespread. Highs hold in the mid 90s as the soil moisture continues to fade away.

LONG RANGE: Watch the Weather Xtreme video… there is a little hope for better opportunities for scattered showers and storms and lower heat levels during mid to late June, and as usual the GFS is showing a tropical system in the Gulf in about 15 days. We all know that is pure voodoo, but just maybe we might have a day or two with a decent afternoon shower or storm. But, generally speaking temperatures stay above average, with precipitation below average.

TROPICS: Yo, Adrian…. the first tropical storm of the Eastern Pacific season has formed off the coast of Mexico; that should ramp up into a hurricane by tonight, then weaken this weekend as it moves over cooler water. This remains offshore. The Atlantic basin is quiet.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend from Panama City to Gulf Shores with a few scattered thunderstorms possible. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 80s, with 90s inland. And, the SST (sea surface temperature) at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is 85 degrees.

NO BURN ORDER: Because extremely dry conditions have created an atmosphere where the probability of catastrophic wildfire activity is high, Governor Robert Bentley signed an Emergency Drought Condition Declaration, Tuesday, prohibiting outdoor burning in all 67 counties in Alabama. Pursuant to the emergency rule, it is illegal for a person to set fire to any forest, grass, woods, wildlands or marshes, to build a campfire or bonfire, or to burn trash or other material that may cause a forest, grass, or woods fire. The fine for violating the No Burn Order is up to a $500 fine and up to six months in jail.
