All is quiet in the weather for Central Alabama as we remain under a strong upper ridge which continues to deflect all traveling weather systems to the north of us. And it is that ridge that will remain the central figure in our weather pattern for the next week or so. For today – Memorial Day – look for a high around 95 with lots of sunshine to go with the grilling or beach laying or lawn mowing or whatever activities you have on the agenda. With the heat, be sure to drink lots of water if you are active to keep yourself properly hydrated.

There is only minor change to the upper ridge over the next few days as it meanders a bit moving toward the west and then building back eastward. The bottom line is that it keeps the Southeast US hot and dry through at least Thursday. We should see afternoon highs in the mid 90s with some locations edging into the upper 90s.

By the time we get to Friday and into the weekend, the ridge becomes very broad and opens the possibility of air mass showers – afternoon summer variety – across the Southeast US and for Central Alabama. This pattern will stick with us through the weekend and into next week. With some showers around and a few more clouds to deal with, we will probably see highs dip a few degrees to the lower 90s.

The trend into voodoo country of the strong ridge breaking down is still there. However, it does not appear as likely to bring a real cool spell to us – more of a weak moderation as highs drop only a few degrees. Interesting to note that the GFS has a possible tropical system on the boards around June 10th which affects Cuba and the Bahamas but does not reach the US. But you know how voodoo is, and that feature may well be gone on the next run.
