Storms Getting Closer

| May 25, 2011 @ 8:16 pm | 3 Replies

Tornadic storms are lined up over West Tennessee and the Mississippi Delta region this evening…

The cellular storms should slowly evolve into a long squall line during the next few hours, moving into the northwest corner of the state around 9:30 p.m.

The best low level helicity values (veering of the wind with altitude) are still near the Mississippi River…

Those higher helicity values will shift slowly to the east, and we believe there could be a tornado or two in Northwest Alabama in the 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. time frame. The tornado threat should diminish after 2:00 a.m. as the helicity values lessen and the winds become more unidirectional. We should also note the greatest tornado threat will be along and north of a line from Sulligent to Haleyville to Athens.

Again, we stress this setup is nothing like April 27. But, the overnight storms bear watching, and we will be here doing just that. Stay tuned for updates…
