Looks like the warm and relatively humid weather will continue for the foreseeable future with our next good shot at some rain coming on Thursday.
For now, the combination of a surface high pressure system and the upper ridge will keep the storms to our north and west at bay. But while the upper ridge is holding strongly, the traveling weather systems are eating away at it slowly. By Wednesday we should begin to see some changes. A strong short wave with come across the Central US with enough amplitude to affect us and drag a front into and across Alabama on Thursday. This means that we could see a small chance for showers late on Wednesday and well into Thursday.
The trough moves into the area on Thursday bringing us the best shot at rain that we’ve seen in about a week. I expect the rain to come in the form of showers, so there is the possibility that not everyone will see rain. Those that do could get around a half inch or so. Some thunderstorms may be strong, but at the moment there does not appear to be a significant threat for severe weather.
The trough moves by early Friday bringing Central Alabama under a weak ridge for a short period. By Saturday another strong short wave moves out of the Central US again to bring another possibility of showers to our area. This is likely to be just scattered showers. The upper ridge pushed into the Mid-Mississippi River Valley on Sunday which will edge the shower potential further east out of Alabama. The ridge gets stronger once again by Monday.
The upper ridge is the main feature seen in the projections well out into voodoo country. By the very end of the forecast cycle, around June 6th, the GFS shows an interesting pattern with a closed low in the vicinity of Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. Could this be the reflection of the “A” storm for the start of hurricane season. That is certainly a possibility, but this scenario is likely to change long before we get to that date, so we’ll just watch and see.

I had a great time at Doo Dah Day yesterday serving as a judge for the Doo Dah Day parade. Nice to see so many folks and their dogs in the parks. I saw one cat who appeared to be quite terrified with the sea of dogs around him! I hope that you have a wonderful day. James Spann will be back bright and early on Monday morning with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video. Godspeed.
