Looks like the warmth has cranked up again with Central Alabama pushing close to the 90-degree mark for highs this weekend. That cool spell we had was wonderful and I’m happy we had it. Perhaps another cool spell may be coming before the month of May ends.

Clouds will be mixed with sun today and Sunday as the highs climbs to near 90. We remain dry despite the MCS that pushed an outflow area across the Mississippi River early this morning. That area of showers with a few embedded thunderstorms will dissipate as it moves eastward into more stable air. While I believe we will remain dry, that boundary will need to be watched for possible development of some isolated storms in the heat of the afternoon. But due to the strong upper ridge I doubt that we’ll see much happen.

We remain under the upper ridge even as it dampens somewhat into mid-week. By Wednesday, a small but strong closed low comes out of the Rockies bringing us a decent chance for rain on Thursday. Wednesday will see the possibility of some showers, but I think the main event will come on Thursday. Thursday the closed low crosses the Mississippi River with a surface low over northern Arkansas. The dynamics appear fairly strong, so we’ll be watching this system for the possibility of a round of strong to severe storms. I do not think at this time that this is going to be a major event, but the upper features appear fairly strong so it will be watched to see how the overall conditions evolve.

Friday becomes interesting as the closed low opens up, moves east-northeast, and a strong short wave digs into the US out of South Central Canada. This low will dig into the eastern US setting up the possibility of another couple of days of cool and drier air for the eastern part of the country into the latter part of the weekend and the first of the next week. This is verging on voodoo country, but it would be nice to again see some drier air and cooler temperatures for us before we get into the summer season.

Rainfall for the next five days is zip as the weather systems remain to our west and north. Rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday should run around one half inch with potential for 1 inch in heavier storms.

The closed low sticks around the eastern US through the first half of the second week before the ridge builds very strongly into the Central Mississippi River Valley. This suggests a pretty warm June as we reach to the 4th and 5th.

I want to thank the North Shelby Relay for Life and my good friend Bob Van Loan for the invitation to emcee the event at Pelham High School stadium last night. We had a great turnout as many groups came together to raise money for cancer research. Also special thanks to Emily Morris for all the hard work in preparing the scripts I used for the opening ceremony and the luminaries ceremony at 10 pm. It is so heartening to see so many people come together for a great cause. Looking forward to heading down to Caldwell Park later this morning to be a judge for the DooDahDay parade. I hope that you have a great day. Godspeed.
