Historic Flooding
This report from NWS, Paducah. I believe that I heard a report that Popular Bluff, Mo., had been completely evacuated!
SINCE LAST FRIDAY…TOTAL RAINFALL HAS RANGED FROM 5 TO 10
INCHES ACROSS MUCH OF WESTERN KENTUCKY AND SOUTHWEST
INDIANA…TO AS MUCH AS MUCH AS 6 TO 13 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS
OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. WIDESPREAD MAJOR
FLOODING…INCLUDING WATER IN HOMES AND OVER ROADWAYS…CONTINUES
TO BE REPORTED. WATER RESCUES HAVE BEEN REPORTED DURING THE PAST
FEW DAYS. AREAS AROUND POPLAR BLUFF MISSOURI HAVE BEEN HIT
ESPECIALLY HARD…AND A LEVEE NEAR THAT CITY IS IN DANGER OF
FAILING. CAPE GIRARDEAU HAS REPORTED 12.58 INCHES OF RAINFALL
SINCE FRIDAY.
* MORE PERIODS OF THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAIN ARE ON THE
WAY. TWO ROUNDS OF HEAVY RAIN ARE STILL POSSIBLE…ONE
TONIGHT…AND THEN ANOTHER THAT COULD HIT WEDNESDAY. AN
ADDITIONAL 2 TO 5 INCHES COULD FALL BEFORE ALL IS SAID AND DONE
WEDNESDAY EVENING. THIS WILL LIKELY EXACERBATE THE ONGOING
FLOODING…AND ADD TO AN ALREADY DANGEROUS SITUATION. MANY
LOCATIONS WILL END UP WITH EVENT TOTALS OF 10 TO 18 INCHES OF
RAINFALL BY WEDNESDAY EVENING.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
REMEMBER AS WE HEAD INTO THE NIGHT-TIME HOURS…RISING FLOOD
WATERS ARE HARDER TO IDENTIFY. BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AND DO
NOT…REPEAT DO NOT…DRIVE AROUND BARRIERS. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO
PASS THROUGH MOVING WATER. INSTEAD ABANDON YOUR VEHICLE AND SEEK
HIGH GROUND IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT TAKE THIS EVENT LIGHTLY…THIS IS
HISTORIC TYPE FLOODING THAT ONLY RARELY OCCURS.
