Good News at This Late Hour…

I come bearing good news at this late hour…

The severe thunderstorm watch will expire at 2 a.m. and will not be reissued.

Thunderstorms continue over central Mississippi, but they have undergone a weakening trend in the past 30 minutes. I think these storms will continue to push eastward ahead of a slowly southward sinking cold front. They will affect Central Alabama through the morning hours. There could be an isolated severe thunderstorm warning, but I think the main threat is now heavy rain exacerbating any flooding from earlier rainfall. Strong winds and small hail will be the main threat.

The only severe thunderstorm warnings now in the Southeast are in Georgia.

Flash flood warnings continue for Pickens, Lamar, Marion, Franklin, Lauderdale, Colbert and Cullman Counties.

Scott Unger at the NWS observed how radar echoes over Northeast Mississippi were evaporating. He theorized this could be a gravity wave/wake low forming. This would mean a period of strong winds later tonight. We will be monitoring for that possibility and the possibility of any other hazardous weather across Central Alabama overnight.

I will have another update at 3 a.m., unless warnings are needed.
