More Storms Ahead
Things have calmed down across Central Alabama for the time being.
Looking back to the west…
There is a severe thunderstorm over North Central Mississippi. This storm produced golf ball sized hail at Oxford. It underwent a split and the right mover has been diving east southeastward south of New Albany.
This storm may impact Lamar and Marion Counties in about two and one half hours.
Closer to home, other storms are lined up from south of Columbus through Pickens County. These storms will continue to affect Pickens County in areas mainly south of Carrollton…and areas near and south of the city of Tuscaloosa as well…eventually affecting Bibb County. They aren’t severe, but could intensify over the next couple of hours as they ride east southeastward along an instability boundary that extends across Central Alabama. South of the boundary, CAPEs are already 1000-2500 j/kg.
Indications are that storms will continue to form in the unstable airmass back over Mississippi and will move into Central Alabama through the afternoon and evening.
A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of Central Alabama until noon and it will be allowed to expire. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see another one later this afternoon as additional strong to severe storms develop. There is a 30% severe hail and severe wind threat across much of Central Mississippi, just edging into extreme West Alabama’s Sumter, Choctaw and Washington Counties. Much of the rest of Central Alabama is in a 15% probabilistic risk for those two phenomena.
It could be quite active this evening from US-82 to the south especially, with severe storms possible across the rest of the area. There are also indications that more storms will form overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning again over North Central Mississippi into West Central Alabama again.
