More NWS Storm Surveys Today

The National Weather Service has already identified nine separate tornado tracks in their county warning area (Central Alabama), but additional teams are headed out to survey more damage today.

…STORM DAMAGE ASSESSMENT PLANS TODAY…

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WILL CONTINUE TO COLLECT AND
ANALYZE STORM DAMAGE REPORTS…AS WELL AS SURVEY PROBABLE TORNADO
TRACKS TO ASSESS THE MAGNITUDE OF DAMAGE FROM THE APRIL 15TH 2011
OUTBREAK.

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM MOVED THROUGH CENTRAL ALABAMA DURING THE DAY
ON FRIDAY AND CONTINUED INTO OVERNIGHT HOURS. NUMEROUS LONG-LIVED
SUPERCELLS DEVELOPED AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT DURING THE AFTERNOON AND
PRODUCED NUMEROUS TORNADOES ACROSS THE SOUTHERN SECTIONS OF CENTRAL
ALABAMA. STRAIGHT LINE WINDS AND LARGE HAIL WERE OBSERVED ACROSS
OTHER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL ALABAMA. COUNTLESS TREES WERE DOWNED…AND
THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF STRUCTURES ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA…FROM
HOMES TO OTHER BUILDINGS…WERE AFFECTED TO SOME EXTENT. POWER
LINES…INCLUDING LARGE TRANSMISSION LINES…WERE DOWNED CAUSING
POWER DISRUPTIONS IN MANY LOCATIONS.

…STORM SURVEYS…

AT THIS TIME…TWO TEAMS OF METEOROLOGISTS ARE ON THEIR WAY OUT TO
CONDUCT STORM SURVEYS.

TEAM ONE: TALLAPOOSA COUNTY. FROM THERE…TEAM ONE HAS A LIST OF
POSSIBLE LOCATIONS TO INVESTIGATE INCLUDING NORTHERN ELMORE INTO
COOSA COUNTY. PENDING FURTHER REPORTS…TEAM ONE WILL THEN EITHER GO
NORTH TO TALLADEGA COUNTY, OR SOUTH TO LOWNDES COUNTY.

TEAM TWO: POTENTIAL LONG TRACK TORNADO FROM BIBB COUNTY…SOUTHWEST
THROUGH HALE COUNTY…INTO GREENE COUNTY. ONCE THAT SURVEY IS
COMPLETE…TEAM TWO WILL LIKELY GO SOUTH TO MARENGO COUNTY.
SURVEY…SEVERAL LOCATIONS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA.

ADDITIONAL PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENTS WILL BE ISSUED PERIODICALLY
THROUGHOUT THE DAY…AS SURVEYS TEAMS REPORT BACK THEIR FINDINGS.
