Birmingham Area Storms…Watching Out For South Central Alabama as Well

| April 15, 2011 @ 10:50 am | Reply

Showers and storms are developing quickly ahead of the line of storms to our northwest…from Jefferson and Shelby Counties northward into Cullman County. Lots of lightning and thunder and brief heavy rain, but nothing severe.

This is the leading edge of warmer, more most air moving in behind a warm front that is lifting quickly northeastward.

Some are saying that because our dewpoint is around 50F, we have no severe weather threat. Not so. You will see that dewpoint jump up behind the front. It is already 611F at Tuscaloosa and 64F at Meridian.

Storms over in Central Mississippi are moving east northeast and will affect West Central Alabama just after 12:30 or so.

This line of storms over Winston, Walker, Fayette and Lamar Counties will not drop much further south, and probably may actually lift slowly northward soon. The airmass feeding into the line will and south of the line will be increasingly unstable and wind fields will become more and more favorable for severe weather as we go through the day.

The SPC will likely issue a new tornado watch for South Alabama and another for Central Alabama later as the warm front lifts northward.

Here is the big picture right now…

Notice the warm front lifting northeastward across Central Alabama.

Notice the supercell storms over southeastern Mississippi and Southwest Alabama. Spotters indicated a tornado near Waynesboro a short time ago. This are going to lift northeastward into South Central Alabama, causing problems for places like Demopolis and Marion between about noon and 2 p.m. This activity could eventually affect Chilton and Shelby Counties…

Another potentially tornadic storm was moving toward Jackson and Grove Hill in Southwest Alabama.

Stay alert!
