Tuscaloosa County Storms Will Move into Walker
Good picture right here…showing the three things we are dealing with…
1. Thunderstorms along the northeastward moving warm front over Northeast Alabama. These storms will produce gusty winds and heavy rain, maybe some small hail, but should not be severe.
2. Line of storms slowing down across eastern Mississippi into Northwest Alabama. We will see several waves of severe weather move along this line during the day. Numerous severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings with these storms. There are even a couple of tornado warnings in Central Mississippi around Kosciusko. One of my favorite Mississippi towns was mentioned in a warning from Jackson…the town of Possumneck!
3. Two sets of isolated thunderstorms, one approaching Tuscaloosa and another east of Jackson. Storms that can develop out ahead of the main line could be a real problem. They are forming in an increasingly warm and moist airmass south of the first line of storms. The dewpoint is 54F at Birmingham and 57F at Tuscaloosa, which is low for big severe weather, but at Meridian, it is 63F, 64F at Hatttiesburg, 68F at McComb and 70F at Baton Rouge. This unstable air will be lifted northeastward during the day.
The storms near Tuscaloosa will push north northeastward into WAaker and extreme western Jefferson County along the Warrior River over the next hour with lightning, gusty winds, brief heavy rain and maybe some small hail. They probably won’t become severe.
Here is a closer look at the Tuscaloosa County storms from the Birmingham radar.
They look meaner on this radar because the beam from the Columbus radar is being attenuated a bit I think by the heavy rain now in the Columbus area. That means the echoes from the Tuscaloosa storm look weaker because much of the radar beam’s energy is being absorbed by the heavy precip closer to the radar.
A tornado watch continues for the northwestern part of Central Alabama until 3 p.m. Keep up with the latest severe weather information
