Mississippi Storms Growing

| April 11, 2011 @ 4:46 pm | 4 Replies

Thunderstorms over Central Mississippi are starting to intensify quickly at this hour.

After remaining relatively dormant all day, the line of storms is starting to intensify from near Carthage to east of Jackson to west of Brookhaven.

Storms are trying to form ahead of the line, but they are still having trouble forming because of a capping inversion. Still,. those will have to be watched as the cap weakens. One such cell is approaching I-20 west of Meridian.

They will push into West Alabama’s Pickens County around 6 p.m. and Sumter and Greene Counties around 6:30.

They will reach the Tuscaloosa area around 7 p.m. and Birmingham/Shelby Counties around 8-8:30 p.m.

Damaging wind is still the main threat, but a few isolated tornadoes are also possible. A tornado watch is now in effect for much of west Alabama west of I-65 until 11 p.m.
