New Tornado Watch

| April 11, 2011 @ 4:07 pm | Reply

So far, so good, with still no warnings across Mississippi. But we’re not out of the woods yet.

Our lines of storms is about 40 miles southwest of Marion County now.

The strongest storm is approaching Tupelo. There appears to be some curvature in the echoes on the radar with that storm, indicating some type of upper level disturbance. Another decent storm was just behind near Grenada. This activity will reach Northwest Alabama’s Franklin and Marion Counties around 5 p.m. It could become severe.

There has been slight intensification overall in the past hour in Mississippi and the line is moving into moderately unstable air in eastern Mississippi and eventually western Alabama. But the good mews is that the best upper dynamics are moving northward into western Tennessee.

The bad news is that the airmass becomes much more unstable the further southwest you go into southwestern Alabama and southern Mississippi. Storms are expected to intensify to our southwest and move into Central Alabama later this evening.

There has not been a single severe weather report in Mississippi today, except a report of a tree that fell on some cars at Oxford. It could very well have been with gradient winds outside the storms that have been averaging 12-25 mph and gusting higher at times. We recently saw a 33 mph gust at Haleyville and a 31 mph gust at Birmingham.

The storms will reach Marion and Franklin Counties around 5 p.m., Jasper/Tuscaloosa between 6 and 6:30; and Birmingham around 7 p.m.

It still could get rough across West Central and Central Alabama this evening with the threat of damaging winds and even an isolated tornado threat.
