Evening in Alabama + Elsewhere 7 pm Report

| February 24, 2011 @ 6:31 pm | 1 Reply

The weather is still quiet across Alabama this evening. Few if any showers in progress. All the big action is still well to the west. Brisk south winds persist across Alabama often gusting 25-30 mph. At Birmingham Airport, the wind was south, gusting to 29 mph. It is almost certain to be stronger on the ridges, maybe gusting to 35 mph.

The high today for Birmingham was a warm 77.

A line of intense thunderstorms 500 miles long extends from the east edge of Texas northeastward across Northwest Louisiana, Eastern Arkansas and into West Kentucky. The line of storms was moving eastward.

Damaging winds can occur anywhere along that line as it moves eastward tonight. There is a chance of some new thunderstorms forming out ahead of the main line and some of those may become a tornado threat. So far there has not been a significant tornado event. These reports so far today and this evening:

…2 hail reports
…23 wind damage reports
…1 tornado report

The tornado occurred at 5:49, CST this afternoon in New Madrid County, Missouri. Vehicles were blown off Interstate 55 from Portageville north to Marston.

Here in Alabama, that line of intense storms will reach the NW corner of the state late tonight, toward midnight. It may be several hours after midnight before reaching the Birmingham area and Central Alabama.

But we must watch for some new storms forming out ahead of the main line as the night goes on. Those can be trouble-makers.

A Tornado Watch continues until 10 pm for a large part of North and Central Mississippi.

We will be here all night.
