A Raw, Cold, Miserable Lunch Hour

What other adjective is there?

We have EF-0 through EF-5 tornadoes. We have Category One through Five hurricanes. One of these days someone, in this index-crazed society will come up with an index to describe ordinary non-threatening weather. Let’s go ahead and name it the Misery Index (MI).

If we had that today on a scale of 0 to 5, I would rate today as M-4

What do you think?

It is a cold raw day and the old thermometer has been stuck much of the day refusing to rise according to orders. For example, the noon temperature at Birmingham Airport was 36–the same as it was when you drove to work this morning. At noon, temperatures were in the 30s over about the north half of the state and 40s down south. I have been out in that rain this morning and it will chill you through quickly.

At least we don’t have to deal with weather like yesterday. There could still be a few patches of light sleet or light freezing rain over the extreme northern counties, but in most areas the Winter Weather Advisory has ended.

There are times when Mother Nature (sometimes known as Miss Weather) lays us across her lap and gives all of us (weather people) a good spanking. Yesterday was such a day and I am still sore.

NOON SPOT REPORTS FROM FOUR LOCATIONS
*  Muscle Shoals, 36 degrees with a wintry mix
*  Haleyville, 33 with a cold chilling rain
*  Birmingham, 36 with a steady cold rain
*  Anniston, 38, light rain

There is always a good side to weather like this. Many locations have received 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain in the last 24 hours and some even more helping to chip away at our defict. This brings the total at Birmingham Airport to 4.76 so far in this new year, which is still a deficit of 1.16 inches.

EXTRA NOTES THAT YOU MAY OR MAY NOT CARE ABOUT
*  Press reports say that 16,000 flights have been canceled in just the last three days due to weather.
* 14 inches of snow on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains.
* 58.6% of the lower 48 has a snow cover this morning.
* 47.8% was the coverage a month ago.
* The South Region, which extends from East Texas to Florida, has a 22.5% snow coverage.
* 85 at Ft. Myers, Florida was the warm spot yesterday.
*  23 below zero was the coldest in the lower 48 this morning.
*  27 below was the coldest in Alaska at Bettles.
