Another “Flash Of Light” Update

| January 13, 2011 @ 9:12 pm | 15 Replies

From Bill Cooke Marshall Space Flight Center’s Space Environments Team in Huntsville:

Looks like Tuesday night’s meteor streaking across the southern sky was a little bigger than originally thought…

“Now that wind data is available, the infrasound energy estimate has been revised. It looks like the original number of 4.6 tons of TNT was off by about an order of magnitude, as the new winds result in an energy estimate in the range of 40 to 80 tons of TNT. This means we are dealing with a meter-size meteor, with a mass well over a metric ton.

This was a big rock!

Regards,
Bill”
