TOO COLD: The average high for Birmingham on January 12 is 52 degrees; the high so far today is 29… not even close to freezing. Up in Haleyville, they have illegal snow flurries and only 24 degrees at 3:00. About as cold as it gets around here. Speaking of those flurries and snow showers, I fully did not expect to see them today, but there was a very thin low level moisture layer “below the radar” as described below which combined with instability to produce those bonus snow flakes for North and East Alabama.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: We will use 13 as the average low for early tomorrow morning. The colder spots up across the vast snow pack could see something closer to 10. And, tomorrow will feature a cloudless sky, but we stay very cold with a high only in the low 30s.

FRIDAY: Still looks like the coldest morning will come early Friday with a clear sky and calm wind; the colder pockets where snow is on the ground have a good chance of seeing single digit lows. But, a warming trend begins Friday afternoon with a high in the low to mid 40s as we begin to dig out of the deep freeze.

OUR WEEKEND: Look for highs back in the 50s Saturday and Sunday, which will melt the snow away finally. Saturday will be mostly sunny, but clouds will begin to increase Sunday.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We will maintain a good chance of showers on Monday, and possibly into Tuesday. A short wave will bring the threat of showers Monday, and a trailing surface front on Tuesday will keep some risk of rain in the forecast. And, for Wednesday, we now have decent agreement with the GFS and ECMWF that really cold air will NOT invade the Deep South. The GFS holds the next cold blast off until the Jan 21-23 time frame… and it remains to be seen just how cold it gets.

The positive NAO suggests the last week of the month could feature above average temperatures, which I don’t think anybody will fuss about considering the weather around here over the past eight weeks. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
