| January 9, 2011 @ 3:58 pm | 28 Replies

The band of sleet, freezing rain and snow is moving into the Birmingham metro right now.

It is affecting the area from Winston and Walker Counties into Jefferson, Shelby, Talladega, Clay, Coosa, Tallapoosa and Randolph Counties.

Expect travel problems to develop quickly in the areas that pick up heavy precipitation.

Temperatures are just below freezing in the Birmingham metro but will drop 2-3 degrees with evaporational cooling.

Over eastern Alabama, temperatures have edged above freezing, but will go back down to freezing or below with evaporational cooling.

We are now in the late in the first quarter of this big event. The main round of precipitation is now over southern Mississippi back into Central Louisiana. Heavy precipitation now extends from Alexandria LA to near Vicksburg to just south of Jackson to Hattiesburg to west of Mobile to the mouth of the Mississippi River back to Lafayette and back to Alexandria. This activity is pushing northeast at 35 mph.

This heavier precipitation will reach Tuscaloosa by 6 p.m., Birmingham by 7:30 and Gadsden by 8:30. It will last about 3-4 hours.

Significant icing and hazardous travel problems will result from this area of heavier precipitation.
