After a rather active end to 2010 and a really wet start to 2011, it looks like the weather will settle down for a few days. Just in time for the boss to return and have some easy forecasts as he gets back into the swing of things after a little time off.

The sky cleared out nicely last night after the front moved through the state taking the rain and storms well off to our east. Surface high pressure will settle into the Southeast states today and Monday giving us lots of sunshine and dry conditions. However, temperatures will be a bit cool with morning lows in the 20s and afternoon highs mainly in the 50s – except upper 40s today. Early January temperatures usually see highs around 53 and lows around 33.

The upper flow will see the trough move by later today but the flow becomes more zonal to slightly southwesterly by Tuesday. This should keep us dry through mid week along with those highs in the 50s and lows at or slightly below the freezing mark.

The closed low off the Southwest US that has been cut off from the main flow finally kicks out at mid-week bringing the next round of weather our way. There are model differences – when are there not? – with the European coming in drier than the GFS. The European holds the bulk of the precipitation at the Gulf coast, and this could be correct in light of the recently good performance of that model. Either way, will need to mention some chance of rain for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. Once that system moves into the Atlantic, we should dry out again until late in the weekend when the next system begins to impact us.

Voodoo country continues to show the trend of regularly spaced weather systems. Looks wet again around the 12th/13th and again around the 17th. The cold air remains well north of us, so there is nothing lurking in the wings to get snow lovers excited until that 17th system. But that is at the far extent of voodoo, so it is very likely to change – maybe several times – before it gets here!
