NOTE: The forecast for individual cities below is an excerpt from their NWS forecasts for that particular city. Don’t have the time to make an individual one from here.

GATLINBURG: Good chance of snow Christmas Day with possible accumulations. High temperature 25 to 35 depending on the elevation around town. Numerous snow showers continuing Christmas night with additional accumulation. Low temperature for Christmas night and Sunday morning 7 to 17, again depending on the elevation. Scattered snow showers will continue on Sunday

NASHVILLE AND MIDDLE TENNESSEE

ATLANTA: Rain or snow is likely on Christmas Day with a high of 42. There is a 40% chance of rain or snow Christmas night. Becoming windy with an overnight low of 28. Mostly sunny for Sunday with a high about 40.

ORLANDO: Partly sunny Christmas Day with a slight chance of an afternoon shower. High 72.

CHICAGO: Mostly cloudy Christmas Day with a 30% chance of light snow showers. High 28.

ASHEVILLE: A beautiful place in the western North Carolina mountains. They expect blustery weather with a 70% chance of snow Christmas Day with moderate accumulations likely. Daytime high 32 and low Christmas night 20. Snow showers continue on Sunday with a high of 28.

WASHINGTON: Mostly cloudy Christmas day in the nation’s capitol with a high of 35. A 50% chance of snow Christmas night with a low of 25. Still a good chance of snow on Sunday with a high of 32.

THE BIG APPLE (Sometimes known as New York City): Partly sunny with a low of 25 and a high of 35 on Christmas day. A chance of snow starting Christmas night, moderate in intensity and continuing on Sunday.

OKLAHOMA CITY: Partly sunny Christmas Day with a low of 28 and a high of 40. Low Christmas night 22. The only precipitation in the official forecast for the next 7 days is rain (and an 80% chance) Thursday night and Friday.

NORTH POLE, ALASKA: Kristie Calvin is our 33/40 weather watcher for that far north location. By the way, she is originally from Birmingham and she sends us some very interesting notes. Yesterday it went like this: “Happy Winter Solstice! Sunrise today at 10:59 a.m. and sunset 2:40 p.m. Total daylight 3 hours and 41 minutes. Current temperature is 29 below zero.”

USA EXTREMES: High Tuesday 90 at Brady, Texas. (That is the average high temperature for Birmingham in mid summer. Coldest this morning in the lower 48 was 18 below zero at Havre, Montana and Williston, North Dakota. The coldest in Alaska was 39 below at Northway. Close behind is 38 below at Ft. Yukon where it was a bitter 60 below a few mornings ago. How would like to be at Barter Island today where the temperature this morning was zero with wind gusting to 57 mph?

SNOW SURVEY: The NWS does that every day in season. Although we do not have the percentage of cover this morning it was 48% of the lower 48 yesterday morning and surely it is more than that this morning. The new snow cover chart shows that every place is covered with snow north of a line from South Nevada, South Utah, the Colorado Mountains, extreme Northern Nebraska, all of Iowa, north half of Illinois, most of Indiana, NE half of Kentucky, mountains of East Tennessee and all of Virginia northward. All of the Sierra-Nevada range separating California and Nevada is covered in feet of snow instead of inches. The average depth is over 50 inches.

LAS VEGAS: Much, much rain in Southern Nevada lately. For Las Vegas there is a Flash Flood Watch all day today and part of tonight. However, sunny weather is forecast for Friday and Christmas Day with no rain.

LOS ANGELES: Numerous showers and thunderstorms today and tonight causing more major flash flooding and mudslides in that part of Southern California. All of this recent extremely bad weather will go down in history as a storm to remember. Mostly sunshine should return Thursday and Friday. Dry weather all day on Christmas Day with a high of 62.

DALLAS/FT. WORTH: Mostly sunshine Christmas Day with a low of 35 and a high of 45.

MOBILE/GULF SHORES/DAUPHIN ISLAND/ORANGE BEACH: Mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of rain on Christmas Day with a high in the 50s. There was no snow mentioned in their forecast.

NOTE: We will probably update this tomorrow morning. But now, I need to get out of here. My tiny, little fingers are nimble, my little 8 pound puppy is pressing me for another walk and fresh coffee is calling. Merry Christmas!
