Tomas A Hurricane

Tomas became the 12th hurricane of the Atlantic season on the 10 a.m. advisory with top winds of 75 mph.

The forecast carries it steadily through the Caribbean under a building high pressure system. It is expected to intensity for 24 hours, then hold stead, then intensity to major hurricane status by early Wednesday morning.

The official forecast track carries Tomas toward Jamaica, but there is uncertainty as to when a sharp northward turn could occur, and areas from eastern Cuba to Hispaniola including Haiti will be under the gun later this week.

Hurricane Shari is already 600 miles ENE of Bermuda, moving NE at 40 mph. Winds never got very strong on Bermuda according to the observations that I read from the Bermuda Weather Service, topping out at sustained 23 mph.
