Update 11:50 a.m.
A tornado warning is in effect for Northwest Alabama’s Lauderdale Counties. The dangerous storm is passing less than 10 miles northwest of Tuscumbia, Florence and Sheffield. Movement is northeast at 45 mph.
To the southwest, we are monitoring the storm over Monroe County MS, north of Aberdeen. This storm will move into northern Lamar and Marion Counties. It will pass near Hamilton around noon. It has the potential to become severe.
The SPC has upgraded the severe weather risk over North Alabama to the moderate category. A tornado watch is in effect for Northwest and North Alabama until 5 p.m. A new tornado watch has been issued for all of North and Central Mississippi as well.
Look at this powerhouse of a low pressure system. It is centered over northern Minnesota and has a central pressure below 963 millibars. That’s 28.43 inches! That is the equivalent of around a category two hurricane!
