MORE LIKE SUMMER: Temperatures are noticeably warmer this morning across Alabama; temperatures range from 63 at Decatur to 76 at Birmingham. We note the dewpoints are in the low 70s down in Mobile, and that maritime air is moving north, meaning our weather will be more like summer in coming days with rising heat and humidity levels. Today should be mostly sunny with a high in the low 90s, perhaps mid 90s in spots.

REST OF THE WEEK: While an afternoon shower might pop up during the afternoon and evening hours, they should be pretty isolated, and we don’t expect any widespread rain tomorrow through Friday. Highs will remain in the 91 to 94 degree range, with lows very close to 70. The main wave action stays well to the north of Alabama as the mid-latitude westerlies are near the Canadian border.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Some hint that afternoon showers and storms will be a little more numerous over the weekend, especially on Sunday, with a weak front approaching from the north. Our weather otherwise will stay hot and and muggy with highs in the low 90s. Nothing like the refreshing Labor Day holiday weekend we just enjoyed. Of course, we all know cool weather like that won’t stay long in early September.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Hermine made landfall last night along the northern coast of Mexico; it will bring heavy rain to much of Texas today. The remnants will move north through Oklahoma and Kansas, then turning to the right into the westerlies later this week bringing some good rain to parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.

GASTON? The remnant low formerly known as Tropical Storm Gaston is really having a hard time due to dry air surrounding the system and rather harsh upper air winds. If this can survive the next 36 hours, conditions seem to be much more favorable for strengthening over the northern Caribbean later in the week. Some models even ramp this up into a major hurricane, others show no development at all. Let’s see how it does after the interaction with Hispaniola. If by chance it does survive, it will be a candidate to get into the Gulf. If that happens, it seems like the most favored target would be Mexico or Texas.

TO THE EAST: A pretty decent wave is coming off the coast of Africa this morning… see the Weather Xtreme video for details on other tropical mischief.
