Alabama Update at 2:25pm

Plenty hot across Alabama this afternoon and before the day is over, we will probably hear of some 100-degree temperatures.

By 2:00 it was already up to 99 in Huntsville, 98 in Haleyville and even 100 in Tuscaloosa and 98 in Birmingham.

The old heat index was a very dangerous 113 in Tuscaloosa and 109 in Huntsville. Birmingham had a 107 heat index. One of the highest readings for the heat index was 114 at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. The temperatures were not quite as hot over extreme East Alabama due to some easterly winds pushing westward from the Carolinas and Georgia.

Scattered thunderstorms were developing this afternoon. Some of those were over North/Central Alabama but the more numerous ones were down state. The ones over South Alabama were moving very little. The ones over North Alabama were moving slowly toward the SE.

Conditions are favorable for a few of these storms to become strong later this afternoon. It is not out of the question that we may see a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or two.

You can bet your boots that these storms will be overloaded with lightning and there is no way in the world that we can over-emphasize the danger of that. It seems like there has been an increase in the number of lightning fatalities this year.
