Alabama July Rain Reports

| August 2, 2010 @ 12:35 pm | 1 Reply

It is well known in weather circles that heat waves and long dry spells are kin to each other but there are limited exceptions.

This July may be an example. Some folks saw decent rain totals while others were high and dry. Trouble with July rain (unless a tropical system is involved) that the big amounts from thunderstorms come very quickly and much of it is runoff.

Nevertheless, we take a look at some July totals around the state. This, of course is not a complete list:

5.92 inches Anniston Airport
1.31 Birmingham
2.10 Shelby County Airport, home of NWS/Birmingham
3.77 Montgomery/Dannelly Field
2.73 Tuscaloosa
1.59 Troy
1.41 Auburn
1.99 Huntsville
3.54 Muscle Shoals
4.42 Mobile
3.70 Pensacola
8.05 Bessemer*

* Jeff Drake, the 33/40 Skywatcher for Bessemer reported that much of that 8.05 inches came in two separate but late-day and evening storms.

Average all the amounts above and it will still show a dry month. While we are at it, here are some high temperatures for yesterday afternoon:
