Strong Storms Over West Alabama
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
MORE BIG STORMS: The strongest storms on radar at mid-afternoon are over West-Central Alabama, over parts of Pickens, Hale, Sumter, Greene, and Marengo Counties. Other strong ones are forming in scattered pockets statewide; they are moving slowly to the north. Like recent days, the storms are packing lots of dangerous lightning, and feature very heavy rain due to the slow movement. The storms will end late tonight.
Away from the storms, temperatures are not as hot today, generally speaking. Birmingham was reporting only 89 degrees at 2:00; a shower just northeast of the Airport is helping keep the heat down at that spot.
REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge will be a little stronger, so heat levels should rise a bit tomorrow with storms being rather widely scattered. Still strong suggestion that drier air will creep into Alabama by Friday and the weekend, which means lower humidity levels, but increased heat levels. The GFS is printing 98 Friday, 101 Saturday, and 99 Sunday for Birmingham with few showers and storms in the drier air. We will lean that way in the forecast, but not go as high on the temperatures due to the increased top soil moisture we have in place thanks to the good rain over the past two days.
TROPICS: A few disorganized waves are seen scattered across the Atlantic basin, but tropical storm development is not expected through mid-week.
