Heat
Temperatures are mainly in the mid 90s across Alabama early this afternoon, with heat index 100-105. Temperatures are 3-5 degrees hotter right near the ground (the lowest 1-2 ft.). A heat advisory remains in effect today and tomorrow.
The ridge of high pressure, centered near Livingston, Alabama, is clear on visible satellite imagery, as the cumulus clouds are rotating around. A few showers have popped up in NE AL, but most of us will stay dry this afternoon due to warm upper-level temperatures and downward motion around the high.
The 500 mb height at the NWS in Calera was 5960 meters this morning, about as high as it every gets. This is due to the hot, low density air causing the pressure to drop more slowly with height.
