An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

SIZZLING AFTERNOONS: The upper high will remain parked on top of Alabama through tomorrow, meaning highs in the upper 90s for most places and only isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. No doubt we will see a little action on radar later today, but the storms will be widely separated. The heat index will push over 100 degrees (the way it feels due to the combined effect of temperature and humidity), and the NWS continues a heat advisory for much of Alabama. This is Alabama and we are used to summer heat, so just use your common sense and stay cool during the heat of the day.

THE WEEKEND: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 00Z GFS is showing a stronger upper ridge for the weekend, which if correct means the tropical system in the Gulf will stay south of us, and the main moisture surge will be to the west. Still, we will be on the moist east side of the circulation, so there should be some increase in the number of scattered showers and storms by Sunday. The weather stays hot, with a high Saturday in the upper 90s, followed by mid 90s Sunday.

SPEAKING OF THE TROPICS: Our system over the Southeast Bahamas is having a hard time due to 40 knots of shear over the system (see the Weather Xtreme video). Still, most models show a better environment for strengthening in coming days, and bring the system to tropical storm strength by the weekend. The models are tightly clustered now with a track through the Florida Straights into the Gulf of Mexico by early Saturday. With the stronger ridge over the Southeast U.S., now the models have adjusted west, with potential landfall over Louisiana or Texas. Some models don’t really develop this one, but others bring it to tropical storm strength. None of them ramp it up to a hurricane, however. It is still very early in the game, and all of this could change, of course. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

NEXT WEEK: Unfortunately the 5940 meter 500 mb ridge goes nowhere next week, so the weather stays hot with the daily risk of widely scattered afternoon storms. Highs will remain well up in the 90s.
