Afternoon Storm Update

Scroll down for a number of severe thunderstorm warnings posted by the Birmingham NWS office this afternoon… the primary risk with the storms today is from wet microbursts, or local areas of damaging, straight line winds. Also, the stronger storms could produce hail over one inch in diameter. Wind fields are very weak, and tornadoes are quite rare in June in Alabama, so hail and strong winds are the big threats.

Don’t forget all summer storms pack a tremendous amount of lightning; quite frankly that could very well be the biggest threat with the storms that form in the hot, unstable air over Alabama this afternoon. When you hear thunder, get inside. It doesn’t have to be raining for lightning to strike.

We should also note that the storms are barely moving due to the light winds aloft; some some local flooding problems are a distinct possibility well.

The storms will die off once the sun sets; I will have a full discussion and Weather Xtreme video posted a little later. Stay tuned…
