Alabama Weather at 4:25pm
There are more thunderstorms around the great state of Alabama this Sunday afternoon than anyone had wished for. Unfortunately a lot of these storms are overloaded with lightning and extremely heavy rain. The amount of lightning is not considered in the classification of severe thunderstorms, but it is very, very dangerous.
Here is what is going on around the state at 4:25 p.m. The short line of storms that moved across the Birminghama area was located along the Walker/Jefferson County line and across extreme North Jefferson County and curving down to North Talladega County. It is pouring rain over North Talladega County from about Talladega northward to near the Calhoun County line. Another cluster of storms up in NE Alabama was dumping heavy rain in the general vicinity of Huntsville, Guntersville and Ft. Payne.
Now, let’s look to the south where a long, long curved line of showers and thunderstorms continues to move toward the north. These storms moved ashore from the north Gulf of Mexico this morning and will eventually be reaching the greater Birmingham area and places like Tuscaloosa and Anniston late th is afternoon and early this evening. Fortunately these storms are not as strong as they were earlier, but a number of them were still dumping heavy rain.
That curved line of storms extended from near Greensboro and Demopolis to Centreville/Brent across extreme North Chilton County and then down to SE of Montgomery near Union Springs. It is pouring rain near Union Springs.
The National Weather Service continues a Flash Flood Warning for SW Elmore County until 6:15 this evening. This includes the communities of Millbrook, Coosada and Elmore.
There was also some moderate to heavy rain near Greensboro. They certainly don’t need any more. The storms on Saturday dumped an estimated 5 to 6 inches in that area based on radar estimates.
All of the storms around the state this afternoon were moving generally northward.
Unfortunately, there is another good chance of showers and thunderstorms for tomorrow as we celebrate Memorial Day.
